Our unpacking is almost complete. Brenda and the kids have been troopers. Now that we are to this stage 5 days after arrival we have made progress in the middle fighting colds, visitors, and having meetings. Now that Bethany has clothes unpacked she keeps asking to wear her “new clothes”. So it is a new outfit every hour or so.
One item that we unpacked was the digital video camera that Brenda’s brother gave us. The idea is to start producing more videos to post on the internet. So one of my first projects involves setting up a video editing computer. Go figure me and a computer project. Well some one has to do it. (Most of the rest of this post gets a bit technical. I am warning those not technical now.)
To get our videos going I am resurrecting David’s old Gateway computer for this use. So far I have found that the DVD drive was dead and the network ports are dead. I fixed the DVD drive issue by getting a new DVD drive for the machine but I am running around trying to find a network card to use in the machine. We used to have hundreds of them years ago when we had the computer colleges but for some reason I can find any today. I am sure they are somewhere in this country.
My hope is to take this used Gateway duo-core machine and put on Ubuntu Studio with K-den-live on it. I have been able to test Ubuntu and K-den-live out on my laptop using Virtual Box and it works great. I would use my laptop but it does not have the firewire port to get the video off the camera. Also I am concerned for the resource use of the laptop with Virtual Box and the video processing.
So I spent all of Monday doing this setup in-between unpacking and meetings. It was a full tiring day. Jet lag is slowly going away. The Nate and Beth are finally sleeping through the night thus so are Brenda and I.
Again thanks for your prayers and support!
Glad you’re getting settled in and sleeping through the night! And I’m glad you’re getting the camera out and ready to use! I didn’t understand all the technical details but I hope you get the computer working for video editing soon! Miss you all
